New Synagogue

The Neue Synagoge was built 1859-1866 as the main synagogue of the Jews in Berlin at the Oranienburger Straße. It is due to the splendid eastern moorish style with resemblances to the Alhambra that it is an important architectural monument of the second half of the 19th Century in Berlin. The designs came from Eduard Knoblauch, Friedrich August Stüler was responsible for the construction and took over the arrangement of the interiors due to an illness of Knoblauch. It was inaugurated in the presence of Chancellor Count Otto von Bismarck in 1866.
Building
The front towards the Oranienburger Straße is richly arranged by shaped bricks and terracotta, accented by coloured glaze bricks. Within the range of the entrance portals it withdraws into the building alignment. Eyecatcher is the dome with gilded ribs, flanked by two smaller pavilion-like domes on the two side-wings. Behind the façade was the front hall and the main hall with 3000 seats. To due to the unfavourable form of property the building was slightly turned in the axis. The Neue Synagoge is also a monument of the early iron construction, the new building material iron was visibly for the outside iron columns and was also built in the dome construction or in the lost floor structure of the main hall.
History
In the Reichskristallnacht in 1938 the Neue Synagoge was set on fire, the fire could be extinguished however and as a protected architectural monument escaped complete destruction. In it was heavily damaged by allied bombing. The ruins of the remaining building parts were eliminated 1958 and in the early 1970er years. Only the front part with the destroyed dome remained. From 1988 to 1993 the remaining frontal structure was restored as "Centrum Judaicum", without being consecrated anew.

Date: 2005-12-17 04:11 pm (UTC)какие-то непонятные посиделки раз в месяц и на праздники. А это чудесное здание было в 86 году на деньги ГДРовского правительства "восстановлено" (перестроено как прянечный домик) для показухи, что типа "в ГДР есть евреи" и чтобы не платить Израилю ничего
